Massive Tourist Exodus from Coast to Buenos Aires

The long weekend for National Sovereignty Day, which extended through this Monday, concluded with a massive exodus of tourists from the Atlantic Coast to Buenos Aires, reflected in heavy traffic on the always busy Route 2. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), the city of Mar del Plata experienced one of its best weekends in 15 years, becoming the epicenter of this tourist movement. Buenos Aires Highways S.A. (Aubasa) reported that between 1 PM and 2 PM on Monday, there was an extremely high vehicle flow on Routes 2 and 11 heading towards the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA).

Traffic and Delays on Route 2 The numbers reflect the scale of the return: on Highway 2, 2,181 vehicles passed through the Samborombón toll booth and 2,017 through the Maipú toll booth during the reported peak hour. On Route 11, traffic was equally intense, with 2,217 vehicles moving towards CABA in the same period. Aubasa warned drivers of delays from kilometer 50 to 45 on Highway 2, at El Peligro (La Plata), due to a lane reduction caused by a traffic incident at kilometer 46.

The large outbound flow is a reflection of a historic weekend. According to the Municipal Entity of Tourism and Culture (Emturyc), 158,775 people arrived in Mar del Plata during this extended holiday, a figure that solidifies it as the most-visited long weekend of November 20th since 2010. The Hotel and Gastronomic Business Association (Aehg) confirmed the tourist success, stating that hotel occupancy in the city exceeded 80%.
